Many people find themselves lost, stuck, or disconnected from who they wish to be and the lives they want to have. There are times in our lives that we feel sadness, loneliness, grief, and anxiety. Some of us have experienced traumas and abuse. We may have coped with our painful feelings, memories, and thoughts in ways that are inconsistent with our values, are not helpful, or that may have become problems in themselves. At times our emotions, memories, thoughts, and ways of coping get in the way of creating a meaningful and value-guided life. Therapy can help us learn new ways of coping with our pain, reconnect with our sense of purpose, and work toward a life committed to our personal values.
I provide therapy from a collaborative and strengths-based approach. I believe that every person has something positive to contribute and has valuable resources, skills, and knowledge. In my practice of therapy, I work to provide services that are based on my values of compassion, integrity, respect, and connection. As a person trained as a scientist-practitioner, I strongly believe in using evidence-based therapies. I received training in cognitive-behavioral treatments, with an emphasis on newer evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapies such as Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches. Additionally, I stay involved in research to keep in touch with the latest studies on what works and what doesn’t work in therapy. Although I am committed to using evidence-based therapies, I work hard to tailor treatment to best fit the needs of the person. Depending on the preferences and needs of the individual, I am open to structured or unstructured short-term or long-term therapies.
My focus is on individual therapy with adults, although I am happy to involve significant others and family members as needed to support the goals of the person receiving therapy. I work with a variety of difficulties including:
- Addictions
- Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Hallucinations and delusions (psychosis)
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Relationship difficulties
- Life Crises
- Affirmative gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender psychotherapy
- Personal growth and values clarification
- Self-esteem
