• The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) provides information on problematic drug use, including educational materials and currently funded research trials on addiction 
• The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA) has resources on problematic alcohol use including publications and current national trials on alcohol use

Peer Support Groups for People with Addictions

• SMART Recovery is a non-12 step peer support group that is heavily based on a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach to addiction treatment
• Secular Organizations of Sobriety (SOS) is a non-religious/non-spiritually based support group for people with addictions. Information about SOS can be found at:
• Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is one of the oldest peer support groups in the U.S. It is based on the 12-step model of recovery
• Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a 12-step based peer support group. It is similar to AA, but is typically for individuals with problematic drug use:
• Dual Recovery Anonymous is a 12-step based peer support group for people with concurrent substance use and mental health problems

Resources for Families with Loved Ones with Addictions

• Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is the most effective treatment for family members who have loved ones with drug and alcohol problems. Results from multiple well-conducted research studies show that 7 in 10 people who participate in CRAFT have their loved ones enter treatment.
• SMART Recovery is a support group for people with addictions and their families that is not based on the AA/12-step model.
