What is this event?
This is a monthly training event and community building event for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy therapists in the Portland area. Portland Psychotherapy is dedicated to supporting therapists in utilizing research supported interventions in their practice. We also know that being a therapist can be a hard job and want to support therapists in developing more self compassion and vitality in their work. We have particular experience with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and so this event focuses on that model.
Who's it for?
Feel free to drop by if you are a therapist or a student in training to be a therapist who:
- uses ACT in your practice
- is new to ACT and interested in learning more about it
- wants to connect with others who use ACT or related therapies
- wants some support in your therapy practice
- want more vitality and mindfulness in your psychotherapy practice
What happens?
We open with time for tea or a snack (you might be hungry as it's around dinner time). This is followed by a brief period of meditation practice. The last 30 minutes of the meeting will change each month and may involve listening to a planned lecture, doing experiential exercises, talking about how to apply ACT to cases, responding to questions you might have, or applying ACT to our lives.
If you know ahead of time that you want to attend, please sign up for a free ticket, just so we know who's coming. If you decide at the last minute to show up, that's fine too. We just like to have an approximate sense of who might be coming.
Time: Third Wednesday of each month, 6:00-7:00pm
Cost: Free (and we have cookies and tea!), but sign up online, so we know you are coming. Thank you.
Directions: Portland Psychotherapy, 1830 NE Grand Ave.

The Lifeline is a way to help clients visually and experientially map out patterns of avoidance that keep them from moving towards their values. It takes the basic principles of behavioral analysis and turns them into something that’s playful, unusual, and richly layered. Although it takes some practice, there’s nothing in ACT quite like the Lifeline!

Some of the skills covered in the workshop will include the values card sort, the life wheel, and “trying on a value” exercises. The workshop will offer a brief, general overview of some of the key components of working with values from an ACT perspective. However, the focus of the workshop will be on hands-on practice using these values exercises. Participants will take away all the materials needed to use these exercises with clients.

Take some time out of your day to learn, expand, or refine your defusion skills. This workshop promises to not only be informative, but a lot of fun! Participants will learn and practice some of “classic” defusion techniques. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to generate their own or tailor defusion techniques to best meet their needs. Have a blast defusing from your own thoughts as you practice defusion with others!

ACT Comes Alive: How to Work with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Processes in the Therapeutic Relationship
The series: This workshop is part of a series of two-hour workshops sponsored by Portland Psychotherapy that are intended to provide practical tools that therapists can immediately use in their practices. Each workshop covers a single topic or exercise and the presenter will follow a similar outline consisting of four parts: 1) a brief didactic introduction to that night’s topic, 2) a demonstration of the technique, 3) time for participants to practice the technique in small groups, and 4) a closing discussion in the larger group. The workshops will be active, focused, and above all -- practical.
This workshop: Have you ever wondered how to use ACT in the therapy relationship? Do you want to make ACT come alive in the therapy room? If you answered yes to either question, then this workshop is for you. Drawing on Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP), a contextual behavioral therapy focused on using the therapeutic relationship to generate powerful client change, the presenter will provide easy-to-understand guidelines on how to identify and use the therapeutic relationship to facilitate ACT processes. Participants will learn how to identify opportunities to use ACT techniques as part of the therapeutic process and will practice using ACT techniques in their therapeutic interactions with clients.
AUDIENCE
This workshop is appropriate for therapists or trainees with any level of experience in ACT.
WORKSHOP LEADER
Christeine Terry, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist (OR #2182) at Portland Psychotherapy. She received her graduate degree from the University of Washington and received extensive training in Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Dr. Terry has experience providing ACT for a diverse range of difficulties including schizophrenia, addictions, and mood disorders.
